Merthyr Tydfil is at the head of the Merthyr valley approximately 24 miles North of Cardiff.

The Ffos-y-Fran opencast mine is in a commanding position looming over the town of Merthyr Tydfil. The nearest communities are Mountain Hare, Incline Top, and Twynyrodyn. The nearest houses (Mount View) are just 37 Metres away from the mining operation.
The mine will work right up to the edge of the A4060 'Slip Road'.
Not shown on this older image are 3 large new-build housing estates (Bradley Gardens, Gelli Dawel, and Dan-y-Graig) just off the Goatmill Road and the A4060, and a large new Primary school at the top of Twynyrodyn.
